The regional distributors plan what they want to get a couple of months in advance, so the pipeline is always filled with their orders for certain color or option combinations that the distributors feel will sell reasonably well and won't sit around long. How long you need to wait for the car to be built depends on how exact you want to be on the various colors/options/accessories and what's already in the pipeline to be built. My order process took three months from the day I ordered it until the day it was at the dealership. Interestingly, they built it two days before the estimated build date!

The original forecast for my truck was a total of two weeks, which was the amount of time I expected. The computer forecasts some estimated delivery dates, but I can tell you from my experience that those forecasts are as good as weather forecasts. The tracking isn't as detailed as FedEx, but you should be seeing steady progress. After that, the car shows up at the dealership one day. The VIN tracking will tell them the day it was actually made, the day it shipped from the factory on a train or truck, and the day that train or truck reached the distribution site in your local area. The dealer should certainly be willing and able to share the VIN with you if that car is really being held for you. It gets a real VIN shortly before it's manufactured, and then they can track the VIN as pictured above. The dealers have visibility to an allocation unit (a virtual car) as much as a couple of months before it's actually manufactured. It also sat at the local railyard for several days before making it on a delivery truck out to the dealer.
It took a couple of days longer, possibly due to weather. The train portion of that trip should have taken 7 or 8 days. It was three weeks from the day it was made until the day it arrived at the dealership. I just ordered a 2018 Tacoma, and I was really surprised how long it took to get from Texas to Illinois. Agreed - time to throw the BS flag at that dealer.
